How to Take Care of Newborn Kittens
As a pet owner, your pet's health is greatly depending on you. The health of any kind of pets is just too important to overlook, let alone the newborn pets. Just like babies, newborn kittens are more prone to harmful bacteria and thus, extra care should be given to them. It is very important to ensure that the environment they are living in is the best that you can provide so that they can grow healthily for the first few weeks after they are born.

It is the mothers' nature that the mother cat will spend most if its time lying closed with its newborn kittens for the very first few days of their life. Since the mother cats are spending most of the time with its young, you should put its food and water near to where they are so that the mother cat will not have to move too far away from its young just to eat.

Although mother cats are staying closed with its kitten, do check on them regularly to see that both mother and kittens are alright. A mother cat which gives birth the first time is especially prone to bouts of anxiousness. If the mother cat isn't feeling safe about the place it and its kitten is in, it may move them to somewhere quieter and safer to hide from others. So check out on the mother cat regularly to see if there is any sign of anxiousness.

For a week or two, you can see that the kittens huddle together with the mother to actually keep themselves warm and secure. If the mother is not around, you have to supply the warm from another heat source. Normally a heat lamp will do the trick. The temperature of the kittens' surrounding should be kept around 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit for their first week. It is advisable to cover the box with a piece of blanket because when the surrounding is too bright, the mother cat will feel threatened.

You do not have to be too worried if you find that the newborn kittens are not moving or playing too much. Being new to the world, they are supposed to spend most of their time sleeping and drinking milk for the first two weeks or so. It is usual for kittens to cry if the mother cat has been missing for some time, but excessive crying may be a sign of discomfort from sickness or hunger. When you detect any uncommon behaviour from a kitten, consult your vet immediately.

Paying extra attention and giving extra care may sound easy, but you have to be consistent in checking on your cat and its kittens. As a pet owner, you are just like the second mother even though the mother cat will do most of the job in taking good care of its little ones. On your part, make sure you provide the best living environment for them to grow up healthily and happily.
